Hesh Goldstein

Nutrition expert Hesh Goldstein is a huge advocate of the vegan diet and lifestyle. His radio show, Health Talk Hawaii, has been on the air since 1981. Naturally Savvy had the pleasure of interviewing Hesh to discuss his philosophy about healthy eating and his upcoming book, A Sane Diet for An Insane World.

Born and raised in New Jersey in 1939, Hesh didn’t consider becoming vegetarian until his 30’s. On his website he jokes about how little he knew about healthy food at the time. “I actually thought that white rice was brown rice with food coloring on it.” Not quite sure what he was getting into, he ate a lot of carrots and low fat yogurt until coming across a vegetarian restaurant in Aspen. Hesh made a deal with the owner, “I’ll wash your dishes and take out the trash if you teach me about vegetarianism.”

The decision to move to Hawaii came about when he discovered a vegetarian restaurant called Mr. Naturals in a travel guide. Eager to learn more about the vegetarian diet, Hesh moved across the country hoping to get a job at Mr. Naturals!

A year or so later, he joined forces with a colleague to open a health food store, which quickly became the largest health food store on the island. In 1981, Health Talk Hawaii debuted and continues to air every Saturday morning. Hesh has interviewed Jeffrey Smith, Betty Martini, Mike Adams, John MacDougall, John Robbins, and many other proponents of natural health.

His new book about a vegan diet and lifestyle, ‘A Sane Diet for An Insane World’, includes articles written by these and many other health and nutrition experts. Like his radio show, the book contains information about every facet of a vegan diet, including genetically modified organisms (GMOs), fluoride, and eggs.

One of his mottos is, “If man made it, don’t eat it. If you can’t pronounce an ingredient, don’t eat it. I read labels on everything I buy. If it includes corn, soy, or cotton and doesn’t say ‘organic’, I won’t buy it. That includes chocolate,” he says, adding that Hershey’s donated $1 million to the “No on Prop 37” campaign. “This is because they use soy lecithin, which is genetically modified.”

“People are basically lazy. They don’t want to take responsibility for themselves, so they are easily influenced by advertising. If you take responsibility for your health, you can’t take it for granted that the food industry doesn’t care about you – they want your money.”

Hesh cites arthritis as a good example, explaining that joints can’t be repaired overnight. Radical changes are needed, such as a vegan, organic, chemical-free diet. “It’s radical,” he says, “but if you want a pain-free body, that’s what you have to do.”

The Astonishing Health Benefits of Sulfur

He shares the story of a guest he had on his radio show four years ago who had testicular cancer. His father gave him sulfur to try and he is now cancer-free. Since then, Hesh has been a believer in sulfur as a health supplement.

“Sulfur can eliminate toxins, heavy metals, and parasites, reduce the effects of exposure to radiation, it’s anti-inflammatory and is a general detoxifier.”

Hesh explains that manure is naturally rich in sulfur, but petro-chemical-based fertilizers which have a much lower sulfur content are what most of our plants are grown in. As a result – and since the body needs up to 750 mg of sulfur daily – many of us are deficient in this important element.

The protocol is to dissolve two teaspoons of sulfur crystals in hot water and drink a cup twice a day, or every twelve hours. The crystals release oxygen, which permeates all cells to encourage healing.

“Cancer can’t exist in oxygen,” Hesh explains. Because of the oxygenation of cells and tissues creating an aerobic environment, cancer cells can’t survive.

You can read more about the benefits of organic sulfur on Hesh’s website.

Listen to his radio show on K108, 1080 A.M. Honolulu from 8 to 9 a.m. (HST) every Saturday morning. Listen on Hesh's website if you aren't a resident of Hawaii.
