We know that omega-3 fatty acids are good for cardiovascular health. This is because they’re a type of unsaturated fat that reduces inflammation throughout the body. They also decrease tricyclerides as well as blood clotting, which can also reduce your risk of stroke. But in addition to all the benefits to heart health, omega-3s may also make you look and feel younger.
1. Wrinkle reduction
Omega-3 fatty acids keep your cell membranes intact and strong cell membranes help hold water in the cells. When your skin cells hold water it creates a barrier that hides wrinkles on the skin.
“These fatty acids are responsible for the health of the cell membrane, which is not only what acts as the barrier to things that are harmful, but also the passageway for nutrients to cross in and out and for waste products to get in and out of the cell,” says Ann Yelmokas McDermott, PhD, a nutritionist at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, reported on WebMD.
3. Lustrous hair
Omega 3 fatty acids make your hair thick, shiny, and lustrous. Good fats nourish your hair follicles and keep them looking stunning rather than old, dry, and brittle. Omega’s can also reduce skin dryness, which can cause itchy scalp and dandruff.
4. Moisturized skin
As I mentioned earlier, omegas reduce skin dryness which is important as you age. The natural oils that you’re born with tend to dry up as you get older, but adding in omega 3 fatty acids helps to maintain that moist barrier that’s so characteristic of younger looking skin.
