5 Ways to Bust Stress Without Leaving Your Desk

By Care2.com

As if office stress wasn’t enough, being stuck in your office while you’re dealing with anxious feelings is like a double-whammy. That trapped feeling just makes you feel helpless and even more stressed out. These easy stress relievers helped me back when I worked a 9-5 in an office. I hope that you’ll find them helpful, too!

1. Breathe

I know, telling someone who is stressed out to breathe is as calming as telling them to calm down. But there’s a reason that this advice is a cliche: it works! The technique that I like best for the office is called sama vriti (aka: equal breathing). It’s subtle enough that you can truly do it anywhere. Just sit comfortably, relax your shoulders and inhale for a slow count of four, then exhale for a slow count of four. No one in the meeting needs to know that you’re secretly doing a breathing exercise.

2. Choose a Mantra

This is another one of those stress relievers that you can do anywhere and anytime. Your mantra can be anything that calms you: a phrase, a song or even a single word. Zone out and repeat the word or phrase in your head until you feel yourself calming down. That simple repetition helps calm your mind and let go of anxiety. The song below is a good example of the soothing power of repeating a relaxing message to yourself.

3. Shoulder Rolls

This one is a little less subtle, but it’s still something that’s easy enough to do at your desk. When we’re stressed out, we tend to store a lot of that tension in our shoulders. These simple shoulder rolls relieve some of the physical pain of stress and, in turn, help you feel a little bit less stressed out.

4. Neck Stretches

We also store a lot of tension in our necks when we are stressed. Adriene does her neck stretches while standing, but you can also practice these in a seated position. Just keep your back straight and your shoulders rolled back and down.

5. Chair Twist

A seated twist stretches out tense muscles and gives you a new perspective. Don’t push too hard in this posture. Just twist until you feel a nice, gentle stretch.
