Cancer Epidemic: The EMF Link

Cancer Epidemic: The EMF Link

You can’t turn on the TV or radio these days without being inundated with ads for fundraising events for cancer research. There are lotteries, walks, bike-a-thons and even cancer hockey tournaments. All noble causes, right? After all, we all want to conquer cancer… don’t we? If that’s the case, why is it that almost all the money raised by these charities is going into research for a pharmaceutical agent to treat the disease once you have it, while virtually nothing is earmarked to help prevent this insidious disease?

Environmental factors top the list of cancer “triggers”

There are over 8,000 peer-reviewed scientific studies documenting the adverse health effects of man-made EMFs (Electromagnetic Fields), with many directly linking an increased risk of cancer to EMF exposure. My guess is that most of you have not heard about the plethora of studies pointing at man-made EMFs as a major cancer culprit, so here are a few examples I will share with you:

  • On May 31, 2011 The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) as a (group) 2B carcinogen based on a specific type of brain cancer called a glioma. This decision mirrors the IARC ‘s 2001 finding where extremely low frequency EMFs (from electrical power lines and appliances) were classified as a 2B Carcinogen based on childhood leukemia.(1 ) This puts both of these types of EMFs in the same category as substances such as lead, styrene and the pesticide DDT.
  • In 2008, award-winning US epidemiologist, Dr. Sam Milham, said that based on his research, high frequency voltage transients, known as “dirty electricity”, may be a universal carcinogen similar to ionizing radiation known to cause cancer. (2)
  • A study, released in 2008 by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based on data representing 90 percent of the U.S. population, found cancer rates for children highest in the Northeast United States. The lead author of the study, Dr. Jun Li, said: “Environmental factors might play a role, including exposure to radiation. Radiation has been linked with the most common types of childhood cancer — leukemia, lymphoma and brain cancers.” (3)
  • In 2002, The California Health Department of Health’s EMF Program concluded that EMFs from power lines, home wiring and appliances can cause some degree of increased risk of childhood leukemia, brain cancer, along with other diseases such as Lou Gehrig's disease. (4)
  • Released in the year 2000, a huge study of 44,788 sets of twins from Sweden, Denmark and Finland concluded that environmental factors were the initiating event in the majority of cancers.  The strongest contender and most likely culprit is artificial (man-made) electromagnetic radiation. (5)

With many of the world’s top scientists and health bodies pointing the finger at man-made EMFs as a major cause of cancer; therefore, why no action?  There certainly appears to be a large body of hard science supporting the fact that EMFs are dangerous and can cause cancer, so why are our health regulators here in North America ignoring science?  Why is the public being kept in the dark, and at risk?

Let’s face it; Cancer is Big Business.

Let’s face it, cancer is Big Business and Big Business is at the heart of cancer. After all, they’re the ones who produce these dangerous EMF producing devices for our consumption. They’re also the same folks that lobby governments claiming “there is no conclusive proof” and that they’re not to blame.

In 2011 the US telecom companies spent over $12 million on lobbyists (6) in an effort to try to influence the outcome of pending legislation and to try and persuade lawmakers and other officials out of regulations that affect their bottom-line, including the amount of EMFs they can expose the general public to.

Today, most of us are blissfully unaware of the dangerous EMFs produced by electrical power lines and common electrical devices that we surround ourselves with each day. EMF producers including cell phones and the transmitters they use to communicate and offenders such as PDAs, Wi-Fi routers, cordless portable phones, digital baby monitors and eReaders, which all use microwave radiation to communicate. Are you aware of the potential cancer risks associated with this type of radiation? Likely not.

Other major sources of sources EMF exposure come from laptop computers, energy efficient CFL lights and BlueTooth devices used by most gaming systems. All of these devices contribute to our daily exposure to this pervasive toxin.  All of these devices are produced by multinational corporations who have one overriding mandate, and that is to produce profits for the shareholders… period. Like with the strategy used by the tobacco companies your health is a secondary concern.

It’s up to you to take action and protect yourself and your family while we wait for our governments and health care system to catch up with science. Check out my website www.emfsolutions.ca to find a list of tips that will help you avoid this pervasive environmental toxin.
