Red Pepper Helps Cut Appetite

REDPEPPER.jpgEating red pepper may help curb your appetite, claims a new study, especially if you don't normally eat it.

Researchers tested the effects of ordinary dried (ground) cayenne red pepper. Cayenne red pepper is a chili pepper and is one of the most commonly used spices in the world.

Previous studies have shown that capsaicin, the active component that gives hot peppers their heat, can reduce hunger and help burn calories.

The study, published in the journal Physiology & Behavior , involved 25 "non-overweight" people; 13 who liked spicy food and 12 who did not. The research lasted six weeks. Scientists tested red peppers effect on appetite using 1 gram of the spice.

How much study participants liked red pepper was determined in advance; 0.3 grams for people who did not like spicy food, compared to 1.8 grams for those who regularly ate hot stuff.

Findings revealed that consuming red pepper did increase core body temperature and burned more calories. And in study participants who did not regularly eat spicy food, red pepper had decreased hunger , especially for sweet, salty, and fatty foods.

"The appetite responses were different between those who liked red pepper and those who did not, suggesting that when the stimulus is unfamiliar it has a greater effect. Once it becomes familiar to people, it loses its efficacy," said one researcher.

The scientists say the taste of the red peppers accounts for the effect on appetite, so taking it in capsule form will not yield the same results. But the researchers admit the findings are flawed because it does not take into account how much an individual likes or dislikes the burn of chili peppers.

How foods tastes to a person can determine how their body digests it and how well nutrients are absorbed.
