Video: Cheap Meat Working in a Slaughterhouse
(Humane Society of the USA, 2008)
Thanks to an undercover Humane Society video, the American government made the largest beef recall in US history. In February, over 143 million pounds of frozen beef was recalled from a Southern California slaughterhouse owned by the Westland/Hallmark meat company.
The video captures a slaughterhouse employee kicking, prodding and using a forklift to “move” downer cows. Downer cows are unable to walk due to sickness or injury. As a precaution to potential BSE, the cows are not legally permitted to enter the food chain. However, according to the video, the employee made sure the cows were processed anyway.
The recall includes meat products dating back to February 2006. It turns out the company was one of the biggest beef providers to USDA school lunch programs across the country, native reserves and food aid. They were also suppliers to other food programs and companies like Con Agra, General Mills, Heinz and Nestle. The plant is now closed and the company is under siege.
