Growing Tomatoes...In The Garden

Growing Tomatoes...In The GardenConventionally farmed tomatoes can be regarded as one of the most intensive crops to grow. Their pungent flavor invites pests and their delicate skins allows for fungus to easily set in. But don't despair - just because a crop is prone to infestation, it doesn't mean we can't successfully grow them without the use of chemicals. All it takes is a little thoughtful planning and dedication.

When you grow a particularly sensitive crop such as tomatoes in a monoculture, it can create a thriving environment for pests and fungus. If the tomato monoculture is repeated year after year on the same land, it's easy to imagine how successful these populations can become.

By incorporating "green” gardening technologies such as integrated pest management and crop rotation (which serves to re-nourish the soil), it is possible to reduce and/or eliminate the use of pesticides, insecticides and fungicides while getting the same yield (and in some cases even increasing it).

To achieve success from your backyard tomato patch, it is recommended to encourage a diverse environment and allow insects and other creatures to help control pests. To reduce the risk of fungus, regularly remove excess leaves and other materials that can trap moisture near your plants and ensure proper drainage to stave off root fungus.
