Pass (on) the Corn
Are you aware of what genetically engineered or modified food really is?
Much of the corn grown today is genetically modified (GMO). This is achieved by taking a gene from a soil bacterium called bacillus thuringiensis or BT. BT is a pesticide that is put into the DNA of the corn plant. The BT kills pests, in this case, the larvae of the European corn borer, by rupturing their stomach. Is BT corn safe for humans? BT has been approved in food by the FDA. Testing by companies that produce BT corn claim that the bacteria is thoroughly destroyed during human digestion and is not bioactive in mammals, just in bugs. Recent research using mice contradicts these claims. In a study published in the journal, “Natural Toxins”, the mice that consumed the toxin developed abnormal and excessive cell growth in the lower part of their small intestine. A separate agri-business study showed that mice given BT developed abnormal changes in their blood cells, livers and kidneys. Beyond mice, reports from farmers around the world who use certain BT corn varieties have reported allergic symptoms from those who are exposed to the toxin (directly and indirectly). In 2003, it was reported that Filipinos living next to a genetically modified cornfield developed skin, respiratory, intestinal issues and fever while the corn was pollinating. Keep this in mind next time someone asks you to “pass the corn.” For more information on GMO’s check out www.ResponsibleTechnology.org. |
