Berries Reduce Heart Attack Risk In Women


Berries have been shown to reduce heart disease in women

A  Harvard study shows that eating three or more servings of blueberries and strawberries each week can reduce a woman's heart attack risk up to 33 percent!

The study of 93,600 women found that those who had the highest consumption of berries had the most significant reduction in heart attack risk compared with women who ate berries once a month or less - even if their diets were rich in other fruits and vegetables!

The study was published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

The researchers attribute the protective benefits to the anthocyanins, a type of antioxidant found in blue and purple fruits and vegetables. Anthocyanins are believed to lower heart disease and cancer risk and to slow the aging process, in addition to having anti-inflammatory effects. Other sources of anthocyanins are beets, blackberries, black currants, elderberries, and purple grapes.

To enjoy the heart-protective benefits of anthocyanins, top yogurt or a salad with a handful of berries or include some in a smoothie. Anthocyanins are not destroyed by cooking, so scoop a few berries into your oatmeal or to a batch of fiber-rich muffins.
