Do Personal Care Products Harm Our Environment: Trudi Gentile: Naturally Savvy

The average adult uses nine personal care products daily, exposing themselves to 126 chemicals every day. Some of these products include shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, sunscreen, body lotion, shaving products and cosmetics. Let’s not forget about our children, there are days when you might rub, spray or pour some combination sunscreen, diaper cream, and even bug repellant on their skin. Most people use these products without a second thought because they believe they are safe. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Industrial chemicals are basic ingredients in personal care products and 89% of 10,500 ingredients used in these products have not been evaluated for safety. Why would anyone want to expose themselves to these chemically loaded conventional products? For the most part, people are just not aware of what they are actually putting on their skin.

The use of such products goes beyond skin deep and is known to affect wildlife, rivers and streams. When ingredients in personal care products seep though our skin into our bodies, many end up in human excretions, while other ingredients are washed down the drain from daily washing of our bodies.

It is time to be aware and avoid all harmful ingredients in personal care products. One way to protect our health and the health of our environment is to use ‘safe’ synthetic chemical free, ‘certified organic’ personal care products. This is great for our environment because organic systems aim to reduce dependence on non-renewable resources while organic production aims at all times towards sustainability and management of the environment and wildlife. Great for our health because all certified organic ingredients are of high vitality and potency and are 100% beneficial to our skin.

With Certified Organic food rapidly becoming the nutrition of choice by the health conscious, why would you accept any less for your skin?
