Hearing Me Out: The Benefits of Red Wine

red wine, resveratrolI’m sure there’s more than a few of you out there who look forward to a glass (or two) of red wine after a long day at the office. And of course, what’s wrong with that? Numerous studies have illustrated the way in which an occasional glass of red wine can be beneficial towards your health, including the way in which it can slow signs of aging and protect your heart and arteries against the effects of saturated fats in your diet. However, a new study has indicated that a glass of red wine can protect your hearing as well. So, we can add that to the plentiful list of benefits.

Resveratrol, the antioxidant found in red wine and grapes can be effective in preventing hearing loss. A study by Michael D. Seidman, director of the Division of Otologic/Neurotologic Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology, exposed rats to loud noises, but gave one group of rats a resveratrol supplement beforehand. The control group that were given the supplement had less hearing loss and saw a 90 percent reduction in markers for inflammation. The group of rats who didn’t receive the resveratrol supplement experienced both hearing loss and saw increases in inflammation.

Now, anytime a study is conducted on animals I always like to come flat out and say yes, I understand that humans and animals are different and that results will never be entirely the same. However, Seidman himself believes the results could be applicable to humans beings1, as resveratrol inhibits the inflammation that can lead to hearing loss and other diseases that both humans and rats experience.

While a glass of red wine can help your hearing stay sharp, there are numerous other benefits to having a glass as well. Don’t forget that red wine has also been shown to prevent degenerative diseases like type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis, due to its large concentration of antioxidants. Furthermore, studies have also shown that not only can resveratrol kill cancerous cells, it can also inhibit their ability to remove irradiated particles which can make treatments for cancer such as radiation therapy, much more effective.

So, drink up! Just not too close to bedtime.
