Should You Try Green Coffee Bean Extract?

Eating a chemical-free diet will do a lot to knock extra pounds off naturally. I’ve replaced counting calories with reading labels and learning which ingredients should be avoided in the foods I eat -- like high fructose corn syrup, trans-fats, artificial colors, and other Scary Seven culprits. But when it comes to staying slim after three kids, I do have a few tricks up my sleeve, and one of them is green coffee bean extract. I started using green coffee bean extract last year, and ever since then I’ve been pleased with its ability to keep those extra 2-3 pounds off with little-to-no extra effort.

How Green Coffee Bean Extract Works

Green coffee bean extract is simply the extract form of coffee beans that haven’t been roasted. The extract is made with an ingredient called chlorogenic acid, which manipulates a hormone in your digestive system and slows the release of glucose. When coffee beans are roasted, most of the chlorogenic acid is lost. By taking it before you eat, it actually drops your blood sugar below the normal level so that after you eat your blood sugar won’t spike. Keeping blood sugar at a steady level facilitates weight loss. The key is to take the supplement 15 minutes before a meal for it to work effectively. People who are are hypoglycemic (already have low blood sugar) or are very exacting about keeping their blood sugar in check shouldn’t use green coffee bean extract (or should consult with their doctor first).

Gaining Popularity

The reason green coffee bean extract has become so popular is because Dr. Oz featured it on his show. He did a study with 100 participants, all women between the ages of 25 and 45. Each participant took 400 mg of green coffee bean extract three times per day for two weeks. After two weeks participants had lost an average of two pounds, while those who took the placebo had only lost one pound. Those taking the placebo likely lost weight because both groups kept a food journal and were more aware of what they were eating. Dr. Oz warned against taking the product while you’re pregnant or breast feeding and not to take it unless you’re an adult. Good advice.

Beware of false products which have flooded the market ever since Dr. Oz featured it on his show. When you’re looking to buy green coffee bean extract make sure that it’s at least 45 to 50 percent chlorogenic acid, and that the label either includes the words GCA or SVETOL. Also make sure that the ingredients are listed and that there are no fillers, binders, or artificial ingredients. I recently met someone who told me they tried green coffee bean extract but it gave them the runs. My initial hunch was that he was experiencing that side effect because the dosage he was taking was too high. I was right. When I asked him to show me his bottle, I saw that he was taking 800 mg/capsule x two at every meal. That was way too high a dosage! It's important to do your research, because too much of a good thing can got it...too much.

Just like reading food labels, I encourage you to carefully read supplement labels as well. As consumers, we want to be mindful of what we are buying and putting into our bodies -- whether it comes from the earth, or a bottle.
