High levels of cholesterol and triglycerides are associated with many health problems and are considered the number 1 killer in North America. Approximately 37% of people die from complications due to this completely avoidable condition. Yet, believe it or not, is the simplest and easiest condition to avoid!

Cholesterol is a sticky substance that builds up in our arteries and decreases the flow of blood. In short, it is undigested fats. Long term this can lead to lack of blood flow, strokes, heart attacks, high blood pressure, and heart disease (a blockage needing heart bypass surgery).  Unfortunately, heart disease costs a staggering $400 Billion dollars annually for surgeries and medical care, more than twice the costs for cancer care! One study in North America showed even 12 year olds had some plaque build-up in their arteries!

Cholesterol and Triglycerides are a form of fat which moves through the bloodstream to your body's tissues. Whenever your LDL ("bad") cholesterol measures high, triglycerides can also be high. Triglyceride levels lower than 200 milligrams per deciliter are considered normal. Whether or not abnormally high triglyceride levels alone raise the risk of heart disease, many people who have high triglycerides also have high LDL and/or low HDL ("good") cholesterol levels. Together, these findings suggest insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is an underlying cause of obesity and high blood pressure, and also increases the risk of heart disease and adult-onset diabetes.

In the U.S., cholesterol is considered high if it is above 200, and very high and dangerous if above 300. (To convert to Canadian numbers, divide by 38.6 which give us 5.18 and 7.77, respectively.) Normal should be 100 plus your age, or a range of 120-160 is considered safe and normal.

I have measured my cholesterol occasionally over the years and found it always to be very low. I am 100-120 which is 2.6 on the Canadian scale. My diet consists of 95% raw food. I eat mainly raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, avocados, olives, and once a week some cooked food such as a cooked yam, baked potato, or steamed veggies. In addition, I consume seaweeds which are great at dissolving fat and cholesterol buildup in the body...
