Are Natural & Organic Products Safer?

Are Natural & Organic Products Safer: Naturally SavvyYou have probably heard that pesticide use in the U.S.A. is highly regulated and organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) manage their use (the EPA has been working on reducing pesticide levels since as far back as 1996). However, despite their strict guidelines, pesticide residues are still found in our food supply. A 1993 National Research Council report entitled “Pesticides in the Diets of Infants and Children,” stated that children’s diets are a major source of exposure to pesticides. The February 2006 issue of the Environmental Health Perspectives Journal reported how a research team from Emory University in Atlanta concluded that children who were fed an all-organic diet ingest fewer, if any, pesticides than those who weren’t. The Organic Consumers Association’s website states how pesticide use and ingestion has been linked to serious health issues including Leukemia, Parkinson’s and nervous system disorders. Children are especially vulnerable because their developing bodies can’t flush out pesticides as easily as adults can.

Joel S. Hirschorn and Kirsten V. Oldenburg, authors of “Prosperity Without Pollution", found the average American uses close to twenty-five gallons of toxic chemicals in their home a year, with a large portion of these chemicals found in household cleaning products. They stated that these chemicals can cause headaches, rashes and/or breathing difficulties in certain individuals, especially children who are exposed to them on a regular basis. In order to avoid inhaling toxic fumes, they recommend switching to any of the environmentally safe, all-natural, non-toxic and chemical-free cleaning products available today on the market.
