If you have trouble separating the green from the greenwashing, want to reduce your vehicle's carbon footprint, are trying to eat local, or wish you could help plant trees in areas affected by deforestation, there are apps that can help you do all these things and more. Whether you're at home or on the go, going green can be at your fingertips with these 10 eco-friendly apps.

Need a little help finding "safe, healthy and sustainable products" when you're shopping? GoodGuide is your best friend. Just scan a barcode when you're out at the store, and GoodGuide will provide detailed ratings for health, environment and social responsibility. There are more than 65,000 products and companies in their database, and they add thousands more each month.

Greenpeace Tissue Guide

If every American family replaced a single roll of virgin toilet paper with recycled toilet paper, we could save 400,000 trees, according to Greenpeace. Want to get the greenest TP? Then get this app. It tells you which toilet paper, paper towel, and facial tissue brands can back up their green claims.

Consumption is a big part of our environmental mess. If you've ever bought something thinking, "Do I have one of these?" then the iOwn app is for you. iOwn allows you to take stock of all the many, many things you have acquired over the years-and knowing what you have is the first step to avoiding duplicate and unnecessary purchases.

The greenMeter app calculates your car's power and fuel use to help you increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption—which benefits the environment and your wallet. It will even tell you what your carbon footprint is and how many barrels of oil you've consumed.

Do you like to eat local foods? It's fairly easy once you find places in your city, but it can be a tad tricky when you're traveling. That's where iLocavore comes in. It can help you find local producers, independent retailers, farmers' markets, artisans, and even restaurants with all-local menus.

Carbon Tracker

Keep tabs on your carbon footprint with Carbon Tracker. This GPS-enabled app allows you to calculate the carbon emissions produced through your daily commute, as well as business trips and vacations. You can also set monthly carbon emission goals to help you reduce your carbon footprint.

A Real Tree

This app doesn't do much to help you out from day to day, but it can do plenty for the planet. When you buy A Real Tree, you are buying a tree that will be planted as part of reforestation efforts in Belize, Burundi, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Haiti, Honduras, India, Nicaragua, Panama, Philippines, Senegal, and Zambia. A Real Tree has partnered with various tree planting organizations, as well as the United Nations Environment Programme.

Go Green

Not sure where to start going green? The Go Green app sends you tips, and the tips gets saved to a Green list so you can always find them later on. Tips include things like, "When you're in the market for a new computer, consider a laptop. It saves space, goes anywhere and uses five times less energy than desktop models."

Green Genie

Another "how to go green" app that packs a punch, Green Genie offers projects and tips that benefit the environment—and the estimated savings for you. The app also links to carbon calculators and green websites, and includes a glossary of green terms and an explanation about the types of plastics and how easily each is recycled. Plus users can submit tips, projects and resources.

Gorgeously Green Survival Guide

Billed as a "quick reference eco-guide for the woman on the go," the Gorgeously Green Survival Guide app is a grab bag of tips, definitions, lists and more that can help you stay informed, save money, and make green and healthy choices.
