It's no secret that we aren't getting enough sleep. More than one third of Americans don't get the recommended 7 or more hours per night despite all the studies showing a good nights' rest can impact everything from your immune system to weight loss to boosting you job performance. But what if we told you sleep deprivation can also affect your sex drive?

A study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that just an hour more sleep lead to a 14% increase in odds for getting busy.  Men's Journal outlines the impact of inadequate sleep for men: lower testosterone levels and less focus outside and inside the bedroom. Testosterone is directly linked to men's sex drive. According to Healthline, "When your testosterone levels decrease, your desire for sex also decreases. Decreasing testosterone is a normal part of aging. However, a drastic drop in testosterone can lead to decreased libido."

Several studies have linked sleep apnea to lower sex drives for both men and women. For men experiencing erectile dysfunction, a 2009 study found that 70 percent of men receiving sleep apnea treatment also suffered from ED. Another study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found women aged 28 to 64 with sleep apnea were significantly more likely to report loss of libido and sexual dysfunction. 

Many times, we don't fully realize the full impact of skimping on sleep. If you find yourself sluggish and your libido is not as high as it could be, a full night's rest might be just what the doctor ordered.
