Soda Companies Spent Big Money Funding Health Organizations

By Naturally Savvy

A new study from Boston University found that between 2011 and 2015 the two largest soda companies in the U.S. donated to at least 96 health organizations.

The study, published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine also found that the Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo were simultaneously lobbying against 28 public health bills aimed at reducing soda consumption or highlighting the importance of proper nutrition.

The researchers questioned the conflict of interest in health organizations accepting money from companies which sell products directly linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and a host of other health complications.

“For example, how could the American Diabetes Association possibly take money from a soda company when its primary mission is supposed to be to fight diabetes and we know that 95 percent of Type 2 diabetes is attributable to obesity or overweight?” co-author Michael B. Siegl told Yahoo. “Similarly, acceptance of soda company funding by organizations such as the American Dietetic Association, the American Heart Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics were surprising for the same reason.”

The study's findings included a recommendation that health organizations not accept funding from soda companies. The Academy of Nutrition and Diabetes and the American Academy of Pediatrics were among the organizations that did not renew their contracts with Coca-Cola for 2016.
