All packaged foods must have an ingredient listing. It is required by law. Here is where they are forced to admit what is actually in the food they want you to buy. The list of ingredients shows the ingredients in descending order by weight.
As a savvy buyer you should never put anything into your body without knowing what it is. Two basic rules of thumb are:
-
If you can’t spell or pronounce an ingredient, consider not eating it.
-
The fewer ingredients a product contains, the better.
A good example is peanut butter. Many companies add salt, molasses, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, fully hydrogenated vegetable oil, monoglycerides, confectioner’s sugar, corn syrup solids, maltodextrin and more. Whenever possible, opt for a brand that lists a minimal amount of ingredients on the package. In this case: peanuts.
