Finding quality time with your family can become increasingly difficult as everyone’s schedule continuously gets busier and busier. To make matters worse, it also seems like we have less and less time for exercise.
It’s time to take a stand! After all, there’s nothing more important than your family and your health. For a busy family, there’s nothing better than exercising together. You get the best of both worlds-quality time with your family and keeping everyone active and fit.
Things are sounding a little easier now-right? The only hurdle left is to determine what your family will be doing together. There are lots of options, but it’s all about what works for your family. If you need a place to get started, here are 5 great ways to exercise as a family.
This is one of the first things that comes to mind when planning a family exercise routine. Going for a walk has some big advantages over other activities:
1. Walking is just about the most cost-friendly activity that everyone can do. There’s no need to buy special clothing, shoes, or equipment.
2. Walking together also allows you and your family to talk to each other without any distractions. This can make for an incredible bonding experience for everyone.
3. Don’t think that something as simple as walking is without health benefits either. Walking can help maintain a healthy weight, prevent disease, and improve coordination and mood.
Set Up A Home Gym
Working out at home is an excellent way to eliminate that hassle of traveling to the local gym. While there will be the initial cost of purchasing workout equipment, it will not be anywhere near as expensive as an annual gym membership for the whole family.
If your average gym membership is $40-$50 per month, that will add up very quickly with a family of 4 or more. An expansive home gym would consist of some dumbbells, a barbell, some plates, a bench, and possibly an exercise machine.
Also, working out at home will present some excellent opportunities for everyone to learn about anatomy, biomechanics, proper form, and exercise safety.
Family Bike Rides
One of the most fun activities you can do as a family is a bike ride around the neighborhood. Your family will enjoy the ability to check out the area, see the neighbors, and being outside.
Riding your bikes together will improve your level of fitness, raise your metabolism, and strengthen your lower body. It is also a great way to improve your children’s mood, alertness, and overall fitness.
Maybe you have a child who is still too young to ride a bike with the family-we’ve got that covered too. Put a child carrier on the back of your bike and they can still come along for the fun and fitness.
Family Sports Night
Picking a specific time of the week to play a sport as a family is a great way to get fit, bond, build trust in each other, and have fun. Soccer, basketball, football, baseball, and kickball are all great ideas for family sports night.
There is absolutely no wrong choice. As long as you are all together, having fun, and being physically active, it’s a great choice. If your family is not quite large enough to play the sport that you want, get some of your kids’ friends involved. This is also a great way to get to know their friends.
Enter A 5K
Now, this may sound a little intimidating, but it’s not nearly as aggressive as you might think. Many, (if not most) 5K events are more of a walk/run than an actual race. This means that even if you are pulling a toddler in a wagon, it’s a great option for the whole family.
Entering a 5K (or similar event) is a particularly good choice for those of us who have very strict or busy work schedules. This way you now have an actual date and time that can be circled on the calendar and there will be no excuses to miss your family event.
Remember, these are just a few of the family activities that you could all be participating in. The options are almost limitless and no matter what you chose, your family will surely enjoy it.
