Many moms will insist that before their kids get to indulge in a cookie they need to finish their vegetables or eat a piece of fruit. But as a mom, I know that doesn't always happen and sometimes kids get their way. To ensure kids get the nutrients they need, resourceful moms and entrepreneurs are finding more and more ways to sneak healthy foods into desserts or junk foods. This creative tactic is what let mom Sandy Foster to start Indigo Rabbit, a cookie company that makes "healthy" cookies for young kids – and the young at heart.
With a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and years of treating patients with eating disorders, Foster has a close connection to the issues surrounding body image and healthy eating. This background cultivated a passion for nutritional wellness that now sees her out in the community, teaching children and families about healthy food choices and how to read food labels.
If you can't pronounce it…
Sandy's lessons in the community translate into her own baking practices. At Naturally Savvy we often say that if you can't pronounce it, it's probably not good for you. This is exactly what Indigo Rabbit believes too, and why their cookies contain "ingredients even a child can pronounce." Indigo Rabbit cookies do not contain additives or preservatives, and are free of trans fats and hydrogenated oils. The cookies include raw vegetable puréesto help you get your daily intake of veggies.
Foster has also used her experience in the community and as a mom to address the issue of food sensitivities in her cookies. Each package is clearly marked to identify which common allergens are (or are not) in the cookies. Indigo Rabbit's website also has an easy to read chart to help you determine which of their cookies are right for your specific allergy needs. Indigo Rabbit also strictly adheres to a food allergen control plan. Their production facility thoroughly sanitizes all equipment and utensils that are shared for different products, and ensures that their suppliers have allergen control plans in place as well.
Our Savvy Sample
Naturally Savvy received a scrumptious package of all five Indigo Rabbit varieties (all with endearing names like Heavenly Chocolate Pillows and Gingerlicious). They were packed full of flavor and each was a totally different taste experience. Our favorites were Luscious Lemon Chewies and Perfectly Peanut Butter. The lemon cookies had, like the name implies, a wonderfully chewy and a sweet lemon taste – not sour like some lemon desserts can be. We also loved the doughy texture of the peanut butter cookies. Honorable mention goes to the Seriously Cinnamon Almond cookies, with their meringue base and tasty, unique crunch. Overall, all five of Indigo Rabbit's yummy cookies merit the Naturally Savvy Seal of Approval.
