5 Foods You Didn't Know Make Your Skin Oily

Oily skin is a beauty downer! Oily skin is more prone to spots, which lead to the one common bane of a woman's existence – acne! Oily skin is often handed down through generations within your family.

While dietary changes aren't known to cure oily skin or its complications, emphasizing certain foods in your diet may help improve your complexion to a great extent. The skin requires a balance of nutrients to function well, just like any other organ. Eating foods that are rich in antioxidants and vitamins can make your skin healthier.

Avoid processed foods, and foods full of fats that can increase oil production in your skin, leading to an ugly breakout. Here is the lowdown of foods you should avoid.

Eating Too Much Of These 5 Foods Makes Your Skin Oily

1. Added Sugars

Added sugars like honey, cane sugar, corn syrup and maltose can trigger blood sugar fluctuations and hormone imbalances leading to excessive oil production. Sugar triggers a process called glycation in the blood. Glycation occurs when a covalent bond forms between a sugar molecule and a protein or a lipid molecule. These new molecules are called AGEs-advanced glycation end products. AGES interfere with the cellular and molecular functions in the body, and they release several harmful and oxidizing by-products. These AGEs are very reactive compared to the parent sugars and cause damage to the endothelium, collagen and fibrinogen in the body. AGEs damage the substances needed to keep your skin clear, youthful and vibrant. Skin can become oily, loses its firmness and elasticity. Therefore, limit the intake of beverages and food that contain added sugars.

2. Dairy Products

This might startle you, but milk as well as other dairy products could be harmful to the skin. They have a horrible effect on greasy skin, worsen acne related issues and accelerate ageing. That glass of milk we were promised was good for our bones is actually contributing to wrinkles and our skin's lack of elasticity. While milk is high in calcium and it can't be ignored that our body needs a certain amount in order to thrive, it can be found elsewhere. Leafy greens like spinach, kale, broccoli and Brussel sprouts have more calcium per unit than cow's milk does. By switching up that glass of milk for a few more greens, you can help your skin be less oily and look more youthful.

3. Fatty Meats

Red meat can be super fattening, and we all know how an excess of fats isn't the best thing for your body. But it's also not the best for your skin. The saturated fats in red meat (like steak, beef, pork, etc) result in excessive oil in the skin. In case you decide to eat red meat, eat it in moderation and make sure to buy organic.

4. Refined Grains

Due to the fact that refined grains lose dietary fiber along with other nutrients in the course of processing, they usually have a higher glycemic index, or effect on blood sugar levels. In research published on "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" in July 2007, forty three acne prone males of ages between 15 and 25 were given a diet with low glycemic carbohydrate sources while another group took a carbohydrate rich diet without regarding the glycemic index for 3 months. By the end of the study , the low glycemic group showed considerably more improvements of their acne symptoms compared to the control group. If you wish to reduce the glycemic load, replace refined grain products like white bread, instant rice and pretzels with whole grains such as quinoa, popcorn and brown rice.

5. Salty Snacks

Most of us do occasionally have cravings for snacks like salty biscuits, potato chips, baked cookies and French fries. What you may not know is that these salty snacks contain high amounts of trans-fats and sodium which will make your skin unhealthy by causing inflammation. Too much salt can cause some of us to retain water, which can lead to swelling. Because the skin around the eyes is so thin, he explains, the area swells easily-and leaves you cursing last night's popcorn when you catch your reflection the next morning. Avoiding salty snacks will be beneficial for the health your skin on the long run.

How to Unjunk Your Salty Snacks

Healthy looking skin can be achieved naturally and easily. Incorporating a holistic approach to your diet as well as your skin care regimen by using quality products such as a facial steamer, can help you remove the excess oil from the skin.

So if you have oily skin, food is your best way to battle it. If you eat the right foods for oily skin, then you can easily control the extent of stickiness on your face. But if you continue to indulge in fattening oily foods then your face will soon start looking like a frying pan. Your diet is vital if you want to keep your oil glands in check. Not all oily foods are necessarily bad for your skin. Some essential oils like omega-3 fatty acids are good for your skin and help to flush out toxins.
