As the saying goes, "necessity is the mother of invention." While today many of us are blessed with an abundance of healthy foods, there are those who remember a time when resources were scarce, and creativity was needed to feed your family. Growing up in Cham, Switzerland during World War II, Gertrude Spindler lived through the days of food rationing. To deal with the scarcity of supplies, her father continued to grow food in their garden during this time. Using the nuts and fruit from the garden, Gertrude's mother decided to try her hand at making a healthy and delicious snack for her family. Years later this vivid childhood memory of her mother's creation would become the inspiration for Alpsnack.
A Natural Choice
As an adult, Gertrude searched high and low to find a snack bar as tasty as the one she loved as a child. When she wasn't able to find a natural product that compared, she decided to use the simple principles of those days back in Switzerland to create her own snack bar. Today, Alpsnack is proud to be USDA certified organic and uses hemp nuts that are certified fairDeal, a program for US and Canadian farmers that deems food as both organic and fairly-traded. Gertrude's recipes of hemp nuts, almonds and fruit make her Alpsnacks gluten-, wheat- and dairy-free and vegan. And of course you won't find a preservative or artificial ingredient anywhere in sight.
Why We Love Them
At Naturally Savvy, we're always on the lookout for filling and tasty snacks that we can take with us on the go. We were excited to try Gertrude's recipe, one she boasts is probably the oldest health snack food in the US. We love that these bars are full of hemp nuts, a great source of Omega-3, with over 500mg of this essential fatty acid in each bar. Biting into an Alpsnack we were greeted with a texture that was soft and chewy, but that also had a nice little crunch to it. Available in five flavors, our favorite was Fair Trade Dark Chocolate. The bits of chocolate were a delicious contrast to the nuts and fruit in the bar, and enough for us to want to give Alpsnack the Naturally Savvy Seal of Approval.
