Trilogy is one of the original brands that I came across several years ago when I first began researching natural and organic cosmetics. Trilogy 100% Rosehip Oil is one of my absolute favorite products.
Let’s take a closer look at their ingredient list and safety. First of all, a product does not have to be certified organic to be safe. The best way to determine a product’s safety at this point is to scour its ingredient listing. If a product does not have a full and clear ingredient listing on the box or label, this is a red flag and I would avoid using it.
The Trilogy website offers clear and concise information on their products. The ingredient of concern that I notice in some of their products is phenoxyethanol. This is an ingredient used in cosmetics products as a preservative. phenoxyethanol is a glycol ether which prevents harmful bacteria from contaminating the product. While it is considered safer than some other chemical preservatives, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep Database rates this ingredient as moderately hazardous with the potential to cause problems with the immune system, nervous system, as well as an eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritant.
Now, Trilogy addresses the preservative issue on their site, saying that they do use a preservation system in their water-based products (shampoo, face cream…). The information states that the preservative is used at a level of 1% or less, and along with a natural preservative like Vitamin E. Trilogy stands behind their use of phenoxyethanol and does carry full ingredient listings, so at least we know that it is in there.
The issue here comes down to your comfort level with using a product with this ingredient. It is a very small portion of the product, but a facial cream or moisturizer is usually used twice a day (at least) and left on the skin to soak in (i.e. more exposure time for this ingredient to soak into the body).
Like I said above, I totally love Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil. It is lightly hydrating on its own, under moisturizer, and can even be mixed with your moisturizer. Leaves skin soft, supple, and glowing. Awesome stuff!
Since you love the Trilogy line of skincare, how about taking a look at a line that is similar, but does not contain phenoxyethanol. You mentioned that you have sensitive skin. There are many skincare brands that my sensitive skin likes, and I do…
