Non-caloric sweeteners promise to tantalize our taste buds with the taste of sugar but without its adverse health effects; but research–and especially the consumer complaints about artificial sweeteners–have spurred many of us to seek healthier, more natural alternatives. Stevia is certainly an option as a natural substitute, but for people looking for more of a variety, Lo Han sweetener may be an option to consider.

Much like stevia, Lo Han sweetener (or Luo Han Guo), is a natural sweetener, but it is derived from an exotic fruit harvested in China. Traditionally, the extract has been used to treat symptoms of the common cold. Once the fruit is dried, it can be processed into a powder that is naturally rich in mogrosides. This is the compound that gives Lo Han its incredibly sweet taste. Remarkably, in spite of its sweet composition, it is non-glycemic and will not affect blood sugar levels.
For those of you who can't seem to completely get rid of your sweet tooth but want to steer clear of dangerous artificial sweeteners (like aspartame), Lo Han sweetener may just be what you're looking for. It can be used in the same ways as sugar to either assist with cooking, or just to top off your coffee or tea in the morning.
