There are so many varieties of onions. Do you ever wonder which one to use? We created this guide to help you decide.

Red Onions

Red onions are great when eaten raw. They can be added to guacamole and add a bit of color. We also love them pickled. Pickled onions taste great on a salad. Red onions are also excellent in a salad, sandwiches, or burgers.

White Onions

These white beauties are the crunchiest and have a delicious sharp flavor. They are great when making salsa or chutney. We also suggest using them in stir-fries. Caramelizing onions makes them super sweet and an excellent addition to pasta, sauteed spinach, or salad.

Yellow Onions

Hello, multipurpose onion. You can use yellow onions for almost everything. They are great in sauces, soups, and stews and get caramelized when you roast them in the oven with chicken, beef, or fish.

Sweet Onions

If you aren't crazy about the sharp flavor of white onions, sweet onions should be your pick. They are also perfect for carmelizing, making potatoes au gratin, roasting, and good old-fashioned onion rings. Onion rings are so easy to make if you have an air fryer.

Shallots

Although shallots are vegetables that belong to the Allium genus, they tend to be sweeter and more subtlety flavored. They taste great in dressings, dips, and chopped eggs and can be used as a garnish on cooked eggs or topping a salad.

Why do onions make you cry? And what to do about it.

Onions make the chemical known as syn-Propanethial-S-oxide. It stimulates the eyes’ tear ducts and causes them to release tears. If you are worried about crying into your food, there are a couple of things to try:

  • Freeze your onions and cut them while they are frozen.
  • Hold a piece of bread in between your front teeth to absorb some of the fumes.
  • Wear goggles. Yes, onion goggles are a thing.
